Over the last few weeks I have been playing with an application entitled “Things” Things is a GTD manager (Getting things Done). Firstly I would recommend anyone looking for a more efficient way of working gets their head around the GTD system. Although I found this application a massive benefit I am able to get much more out of the application with a grasp of the GTD basics.

Things is still in beta but is already a slick, full featured task management application that is very easy to use. Taking Things on the road is also made easier with the iPhone sync capabilities over a wireless LAN.

The GUI is particularly stunning and really makes Things a breeze to use. Projects are broken down into mini tasks (next actions). You can quickly create a project and populate it with next actions that can then be dragged and dropped into any order. You can also control the number of next actions visible for each project when using the ‘Next’ tab.

Tasks can be quickly added to Things using the Quick Entry system. These appear in the ‘In box’ to be then dragged to the appropriate project when you have the time.

I am no GTD expert, in fact I only really have any sort of idea after a talk at CreativeCamp Belfast but anything I describe is basically how I use the use Things to get the most of my time. I have opted to use tags as location indicators. For example, Home, Office, Phone etc. I can then tag a task as Phone and using the top navigation bar clicking phone shows me all the tasks tagged appropriately and thus things I can do when at the phone. It might not be the correct use but it really works for me, it is amazing what you forget and Things has already reminded me of things I need to do I would have forgotten about otherwise.

I have not explored the use of ‘People’ and team management although I can already think of two or three applications where it would be useful.

Iphone
An iPhone version of Things is already available on the iTunes Apps store (around £6). The software syncs over the air but at this stage only over the Local Area Network. I am hoping to see over the air syncing via Mobile Me and the ability to sync with two computers but it is a beta and early days after all.

The sync seems to work really well although I have had a few ghost items in the inbox on the iphone after a sync but no doubt this will be ironed out with the final release.

I could rave on about how good Things is for quite a while. Many of my mac friends swear by Omnifocus but although I have tried Omnifocus and really like it I am finding Things really works for me (and is really nice to look at).

To get a copy of the beta application (free) visit Things If you are using Things or another GTD application we would love to hear your comments on getting the most of the software.

A number of instruments are provided (drums, piano, bass guitar, blues guitar, and crowd) that make full use of the multi-touch abilities of the iPhone to allow you to play complex chords in real time. As well as hearing the note, you will be able to see the screen react instantly to your touch: piano keys really depress and guitar strings really strum.

All the instruments can be recorded, overdubbed, and mixed together into a song, which can be stored for later playback. Instruments have individual volume and pan settings, and can be muted or ’soloed’ during playback.

A configurable metronome can be enabled during recording to help you to keep in time, and, if you make a mistake: simply erase the last few notes, overdub, or instrument, from the mix and record it again.

Text and screenshots are not enough to fully describe a product as dynamic as Band. The following video gives an example of the recording process and showcases some of the demos that ship with the application.

This is a really fun application and only costs £5.99 in the UK. Definitely worth a look. Click here to see the App.

Apple have just announced that more than 500 native applications will be available on the iPhone’s App Store when Apple’s iPhone™ 3G goes on sale tomorrow. Apple’s iPhone provides a breakthrough mobile platform for developers, who have created an incredible array of innovative applications such as stunning action games, advanced medical applications and robust productivity tools for the enterprise.

These apps will be available on Apple’s revolutionary new App Store, enabling customers to wirelessly download them directly onto their iPhones and start using them immediately. More than 125 applications are being offered to iPhone customers for free.

The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast*, built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs hundreds of third party applications available through the new App Store which is a built-in application on every iPhone running iPhone 2.0 software.

“iPhone represents a new software platform for developers, combining the most advanced mobile operating system, sophisticated developer tools and a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly sell and distribute their applications right onto every iPhone,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The reaction from developers has been very, very positive and we’re opening the App Store with over 500 native iPhone applications available for immediate purchase and download.”

Many of these amazing new applications also take advantage of iPhone’s large display, Multi-Touch™ user interface, fast hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location-based technology to bring far more powerful applications to the mobile arena than ever before.

The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it is accessible from just about anywhere, so users can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly. Applications are free or charged to the user’s iTunes® account and the App Store notifies the user when updates are available for their apps. The App Store is also available in iTunes (www.itunes.com/uk) running on a Mac® or PC, which syncs applications to the iPhone or iPod® touch using a USB cable.

The App Store will offer over 500 native applications from hundreds of companies around the world in a variety of categories including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.

“iPhone enables The Associated Press to deliver news in a way that simply wasn’t possible before,” said Benjamin Mosse, director of Mobile Products, The Associated Press. “Taking advantage of iPhone’s revolutionary location-based services, our Mobile News network can capture and store local news stories that can be read by users even when they’re offline and our award winning photography and AP video are displayed in stunning clarity on its high resolution screen.”

“iPhone is changing the entire mobile industry and has quickly become the number one mobile device for accessing eBay,” said Ken G. Sun, group product manager, eBay Mobile. “Users can shop, track bids and get great deals from the largest online marketplace in the world directly from their iPhone. We couldn’t deliver such a complete and easy-to-use eBay experience on any other mobile device and iPhone users can download it free from the new App Store.”

“iPhone is one of the most popular ways for people to enjoy Facebook on-the-go and we’re excited to deliver a great native application via the App Store,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook. “Facebook is even cooler on the iPhone 3G, with the ability to discover friends nearby, or to effortlessly take pictures and upload them instantly to their Facebook account.”

“The global MySpace community will love MySpace Mobile on iPhone,” said Chris DeWolfe, CEO and Co-Founder of MySpace. “With rich features such as seamless photo uploading from iPhone to your MySpace profile, the MySpace Mobile application is gorgeous and as intuitive as possible—empowering the community with complete control over their global MySpace network right from the palm of their hand.”

“Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch open up the world of games to an entirely new audience,” said David Cobb, vice president of Product Development, Sega. “The touch and tilt controls are natural and easy to learn, making gaming even more inviting, creative and rewarding. Super Monkey Ball takes advantage of these defining aspects and offers consumers an extremely accessible, imaginative and fun game experience. Whether an iPhone owner is new to games, or has been a fan for years, they will be intrigued and engaged by Super Monkey Ball and this progressive way to interact with entertainment.”

“With an iPhone in your pocket, you’ll never roam alone,” said Jeffrey Glueck, CMO of Travelocity. “From finding the nearest hotel with just a few taps to checking your flight status in a snap, the magic of iPhone lets us put tools that no one has ever seen before in the hands of travelers.”

In addition to the App Store, the iPhone 2.0 software update includes enterprise support, contact search, complete iWork® and MS Office document viewing support, the ability to delete or move emails in bulk, saving images from emails, a scientific calculator, parental controls and support for 16 additional languages.

Pricing & Availability
The App Store will be available beginning today via iTunes 7.7 and part of the free iPhone 2.0 software update for all iPhone customers on July 11. iPhone 2.0 is also available for iPod touch users for £5.99. iPhone 3G will be available in 21 countries— Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US—on July 11. iPhone 3G will go on sale in France on July 17. Obviously it is very early days for the store and things will grow over the next few months as more developers join the programme.

We would like to hear your opinions on the store. We personally feel there are a few highlights such as twitterific for iPhone, etch-a-sketch to name but two. Our first free downloads are definitely going to be the AIM Client and the iTunes Remote Control

There is no doubt Apple are set to revolutionise the mobile market with the iPhone 2 software. We are expecting a number of big names to release their software once things have settled down after the 11th launch.

Big Stone Phone is proud to announce the release of three brand new applications for the iPhone. All three applications make use of the iPhone’s built in camera, but with differing intentions - one app, TalkingPics, has many practical applications, while another, called iGraffiti, is just pure fun.

The third application, Twittelator, is a full-featured Twitter client for the iPhone with the ability to send a map of the user’s location with one click and automatically upload snapshots to TwitPics.com.

TalkingPics allows the user to make many voice and music recordings for later playback. You can add a new snapshot, a library photo or even a map of your current location using the iPhone’s GPS functionality. Think of it as “sonic captioning,” allowing users to “make notes” without using a keypad or stylus to enter words. You can have many projects, which each contain as many entries as you like. The software has many practical applications, as developer Andrew Stone pointed out.

“We designed it for working professionals such as doctors, police officers, real estate agents and any profession where people need to take visual and audio notes in a hands-free way. And of course, students will love it, especially the introductory price of just $9.99!” said Stone.

iGraffiti lets users take a picture and then paint on it using the tip of the finger on the iPhone’s touch screen. Users can adjust brush stroke, shadow and effects, and can choose from a 48-color “crayon” palette picker for their paint colors. Making use of the iPhone’s motion features, users can shake the iPhone once to delete the last action, and shake twice to start from the beginning. Users can also pull images from the web for manipulation with iGraffiti, and then submit their art to the web.

“We’ve been having a lot of fun with this one,” said Stone. “Finished images can be saved in Photos and emailed to friends, used as Contact pictures or can even be shared with the iGraffiti community over the web. Visit Stone Software’s website to see the public art space. At $4.99 USD, it’s a must-have app!”

Twittelator lets you instantly twitter a link to the map of your current location to the popular social networking site Twitter. In an emergency, you can microblog a help message with your location with just one click. With all the standard features of a twitter client, Twittelator is a must-have application for Twitter users. Most importantly, Twittelator is 100% free!

Big Stone Phone is the result of a collaboration between two well-known Apple developers, Andrew Stone and Jeff Biggus and an award winning Mac artist, Ollie Wagner. Mr. Stone is the founder of Stone Design of Albuquerque, makers of Stone Works Creative Suite that bundles together 17 productivity applications for Mac OS X. The Suite includes Create, a page layout and web publishing program, iMaginator, an image manipulation program, and Videator, a video effects and VJ’ing program along with more than a dozen others. Mr. Biggus is a Chicago-based consultant who runs the popular HyperJeff OS X website for Mac users and developers. Mr. Wagner creates icons for applications on the Mac and iPhone.

“Developing for the iPhone is so much fun,” said Stone. “It’s a new frontier. Part of the fun comes from knowing that there are tons of other developers out there trying to make great software for this incredible device. We’re just one of hundreds if not thousands of groups on the planet trying to make something great.”

The applications are available for download and use today directly from your iPhone by clicking “App Store”. Direct links to the apps will be posted at their website.
