Aquafadas is pleased to announce the immediate availability of VideoPier and VideoPier HD v1.0. The VideoPier family of products is aimed at videographers who own MPEG-2 or AVCHD camcorders and who struggle with these video formats on their Mac.

VideoPier and VideoPier HD make it very easy to transfer clips from these camcorders to a central location on their Mac, without requiring any conversion, without any loss in quality. The clips appear grouped by Events in the VideoPier elegant user interface, ready to be viewed, organized and converted to any format.
VideoPier handles equally well data that has already been copied to disk and will let you access all your clips easily. In addition, VideoPier HD lets you capture HDV material directly from tape based HDV camcorders.

VideoPier and VideoPier HD v1.0 integrates seamlessly with your other video applications and let you use workflows that are not supported by default on the Mac. One example: still using iMovie06 ? Use VideoPier to acquire data from your MPEG2 or AVCHD camcorder; then use the specifically designed iMovie06 export function to send versions of those clips to iMovie06 in a format it understands.

VideoPier comes with an extensive set of export functionality, to iMovie 06/08, iPhone, Quicktime and Final Cut (VideoPier HD only).

If you work with MPEG2 and AVCHD material, VideoPier will make your life a lot easier.

Language support
English, French

I am genuinely saddened by the news that Techspansion the company behind my all time video conversion application Visualhub is to cease developing their range of software. The message on their website used the familiar “Nostalgia” message to convey “It was good while it lasted”.

We have been using Visualhub for a few years now as it was one of the few applications that allowed conversion to any other format and that even included windows media (WMV).

The software also enabled users to get as much video on to a DVD that they desired with Visualhub managing all the compression etc.

The company stated :

…After much soul-searching (it’s not you, it’s me), for personal reasons, Techspansion is closing its virtual doors. The Support Forum and Support E-mail will be available for a while longer to take care of any remaining issues for you. Thanks for all your support. It’s been a fun ride.

We have covered the application a few times and have produced a very quick guide on how easy it is/was to convert video to any other format using Visualhub. (here) and listed it in our top favourite applications.

We bid Techspansion a very sad farewell you will definitely be missed !

We have been fans of the Apple TV since their release and with each update the device becomes more and more a living room centre piece. The Apple TV update, 2.2 offers a number of new features as well a fixing an important security flaw.

Apple have just released version 8 of their iTunes media management software with a host of new features. Grid mode, new visualisation engine and the new genius mode.

Firstly I have to say how much I am loving grid mode. You can opt between artists, genre and album view with the ability to play the full album or double click for selected songs.

The only negative I have found is that is really highlights the missing album art although it does appear as if iTunes is now better at locating album art as I have a number of albums not available on iTunes that when I selected ‘find album art’ it was able to do so.

The new Genius features do look, well genius, that said I am naturally skeptical when people stress that data sent to Apple is anonymous. I guess what is the big deal in Apple knowing what music I listen to and how often but it really did feel quite strange that I had to log into my iTunes account to activate this anonymous feature.

When you turn on iTunes 8’s new Genius feature, information about your music library is again, anonymously sent to the iTunes Store, where it is combined with the anonymously-gathered knowledge from millions of other iTunes users and processed through Apple-developed algorithms.

The Genius results, specifically tailored to your personal music library, are sent back to your computer to enable users to automatically create Genius playlists in iTunes and on your iPods, even when they are not connected to the Internet.

One of the Genius features displays ‘recommendations’ from the store I guess like the mini store and most users ended up turning off. You can hide these easily enough from view though.

The play lists do seem to work well, and I am no genius but it looks as it selects songs of the same tempo, volume, and perhaps style other than that there is no obvious connection. The thing is though, it works I have tried 4-5 different playlists and I am hearing songs from my 32GB of music I had completely forgotten about. Hopefully as more users start using the system it will get even better. This feature should avoid the random Metallica song appearing in a playlist when you have visitors round and you employ iTunes for the casual, relaxed background music. Metallica are great but definitely not background music for the middle aged.

I think there is only one word to describe the new visualisation system and that is stunning, here is hoping it makes its way onto the Apple TV in the near future.

Over the last few weeks I have been playing with an application entitled “Things” Things is a GTD manager (Getting things Done). Firstly I would recommend anyone looking for a more efficient way of working gets their head around the GTD system. Although I found this application a massive benefit I am able to get much more out of the application with a grasp of the GTD basics.

Things is still in beta but is already a slick, full featured task management application that is very easy to use. Taking Things on the road is also made easier with the iPhone sync capabilities over a wireless LAN.

The GUI is particularly stunning and really makes Things a breeze to use. Projects are broken down into mini tasks (next actions). You can quickly create a project and populate it with next actions that can then be dragged and dropped into any order. You can also control the number of next actions visible for each project when using the ‘Next’ tab.

Tasks can be quickly added to Things using the Quick Entry system. These appear in the ‘In box’ to be then dragged to the appropriate project when you have the time.

I am no GTD expert, in fact I only really have any sort of idea after a talk at CreativeCamp Belfast but anything I describe is basically how I use the use Things to get the most of my time. I have opted to use tags as location indicators. For example, Home, Office, Phone etc. I can then tag a task as Phone and using the top navigation bar clicking phone shows me all the tasks tagged appropriately and thus things I can do when at the phone. It might not be the correct use but it really works for me, it is amazing what you forget and Things has already reminded me of things I need to do I would have forgotten about otherwise.

I have not explored the use of ‘People’ and team management although I can already think of two or three applications where it would be useful.

Iphone
An iPhone version of Things is already available on the iTunes Apps store (around £6). The software syncs over the air but at this stage only over the Local Area Network. I am hoping to see over the air syncing via Mobile Me and the ability to sync with two computers but it is a beta and early days after all.

The sync seems to work really well although I have had a few ghost items in the inbox on the iphone after a sync but no doubt this will be ironed out with the final release.

I could rave on about how good Things is for quite a while. Many of my mac friends swear by Omnifocus but although I have tried Omnifocus and really like it I am finding Things really works for me (and is really nice to look at).

To get a copy of the beta application (free) visit Things If you are using Things or another GTD application we would love to hear your comments on getting the most of the software.

Boinx Software announced today it has acquired PhotoPresenter, the award-winning quick presentation tool
from Arizona Software. PhotoPresenter is a template-based photo viewer that helps photographers to make animated slideshows in just a few seconds. PhotoPresenter complements Boinx Software’s other photo presentation products FotoMagico Express and FotoMagico Pro.

While FotoMagico (www.boinx.com/fotomagico) gives digital photographers fine-granular controls for creative storytelling, PhotoPresenter (www.boinx.com/photopresenter) is the perfect tool for making stylish photo presentations available without authoring effort.

“With the acquisition of PhotoPresenter we strengthen our market position in Mac-based photo presentation solutions for professional photographers”, said Oliver Breidenbach, CEO of Boinx Software. “How often do professional photographers need to present results in front of impatient clients, literally directly out of the camera?

With PhotoPresenter they can create ready-to-present animated slideshows with just a few mouse clicks. FotoMagico, in contrast, is the best choice if they want to tell a sophisticated story in photos with every detail of control possible. Professional photographers will have a need for both to match their different presentation workflow requirements.” Boinx Software has big plans for both PhotoPresenter and FotoMagico, with new major releases planned for 2009.

“As we are moving to new fields of interest, we wanted to give PhotoPresenter into new, responsible hands. Boinx Software has an outstanding reputation in developing quality presentation software for professional photographers,” said Jean Bovet, who founded Arizona Software with his brother Simon in 1989. “We¬¥re glad that PhotoPresenter has found a new home. Boinx will also take care of the existing customers.”

PhotoPresenter, winner of the Apple Design Award “Best Mac OS X Student Product Runner-Up” in 2006, helps digital photographers present their photos with style. With the pre-built animated style templates, creating an impressive slideshow requires no authoring know-how. Select the photos or the album of the iPhoto or Aperture library you’d like to show to your client, choose your preferred style template and you’re done. With just a few clicks you can show your customer a bunch of photos from the last shooting, elaborately animated and almost instantly.

PhotoPresenter smoothly integrates with your favorite photo management applications on the Mac: it recognizes both iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and can play any song or playlist from iTunes. Photos can be imported from any source, such as a folder, CD, DVD or digital camera. Mixing images, movies and sound to a stylish slideshow movie is a snap. Share your photo presentation via Email, export it to iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, iWeb or iDVD, or produce a QuickTime movie or screensaver for your client.

PhotoPresenter supports multiple displays and can even treat all monitors as a single video wall for huge, breathtaking presentations. Get more information about Boinx PhotoPresenter at http://boinx.com/photopresenter.

Availability and Pricing
PhotoPresenter 3.4 is available immediately for download for $19.95 (US) in the Boinx Software Kagi Store at boinx.com/kagi. A family license (for up to five computers in a household) for PhotoPresenter is available for $35.95 (US). All prices quoted exclude sales tax or VAT where applicable. Check the Kagi Store for quotes in local currencies. Multi-user license discounts are available upon request. Existing PhotoPresenter customers can update to the new version 3.4 with the new Push 3D style template for free.

Mark/Space, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of a Symbian version of its data transfer software, The Missing Sync for Symbian. Now Mac users can take full advantage of Symbian OS devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

The Missing Sync for Symbian is the first Mark/Space product to feature Proximity Sync™ technology. This new approach to synchronization uses Bluetooth to sync data automatically when the devices are close to each other.

Brian Hall, Mark/Space CEO, said “I know people are going to love the ease of use brought by Proximity Sync. Just having your phone in the same room as your Mac from time to time is all you need to do to keep in sync.”

Syncing without thinking, wireless and cable free
Users won’t ever need to remember to sync again. When the phone is in range of the Mac – within approximately 30 feet – Proximity Sync will connect via Bluetooth and synchronize the correct information.

The process is entirely automatic; no user intervention is necessary at any point. The synchronization process can happen with your phone still in your pocket. No messy cables, just automatic file transfers through the air.

Contacts, calendars and tasks

BT Total Broadband’s stylish new Home Hub gives customers the best wireless signal of any UK broadband provider – thanks to next-generation wi-fi technology that enables reception even in areas that other routers find difficult to reach.

The sleek new design houses the latest ‘N’ standard wireless technology which gives stronger and more reliable connections than routers offered by other UK broadband providers; BT is the first UK ISP to offer ‘N’-standard wireless technology.

A host of other new features have been incorporated into the distinctively curved new design – including a simpler set-up process, improved security and power-saving functionality. The new Home Hub, worth £90, will be free to new customers who sign up to a BT Total Broadband Option 3 contract. It’s also included with Option 2 online orders. Existing customers can purchase the new Hub at half price - £45.

Setting up the new Hub is now child’s play with half the number of steps of the old set-up process, enabling customers to get online and wirelessly surfing the web within minutes.

The new Hub also comes with improved security with the latest WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) technology enabled out-of-the-box to ensure the best possible defence against potential wireless hackers and snoopers.

Another new feature of the latest Hub is the Power Save mode which enables customers to be more energy efficient when they aren’t using BT Total Broadband. Via their internet browser customers can programme the Hub to turn off the wireless function when it is not in use, saving around 20 per cent in energy compared to leaving it on whilst not in use.

The new Hub is complemented by a fully-featured dect phone with High Definition Sound for crystal clear calls. The phone also has a number of inclusive features, for example, a socket to plug in an inductive neck loop for people who wear hearing aids, keypad numbers in a clear typeface for visually-impaired people and a much easier phone-to-hub fitting system for everyone.

John Petter, managing director, BT Retail Consumer, said: “The new Hub will give you up to twice the wireless range of our competitors - giving our customers much more coverage in the home, even in those ‘difficult-to-reach’ areas, and more freedom to use their broadband wirelessly from wherever they want – whether in the living room, bedroom or even in a garden. The ‘N’ standard technology also helps to prevent your wireless connection from annoyingly disappearing by providing a much more efficient wireless signal. Put simply, our new Home Hub reaches the parts other hubs cannot reach.”

* Through ‘N’-standard technology the new Home Hub will offer up to twice the wireless range of other routers when connecting to other devices also using the ‘N’ standard. With devices using the current ‘G’ standard the reach is still improved, bringing within reach areas that were previously out of range. ‘N’ is becoming the new wireless standard with more and more devices expected on the market in the near future. In the mean time, customers wishing to achieve optimum wireless reception can purchase ‘N’ adaptors for their wireless equipment.

We are hoping this will bring some good news or Mac users wanting to the use Back to My Mac service.

The new models of EyeTV Hybrid, EyeTV Diversity and EyeTV DTT introduce a matte aluminium finish, and each of the three products gain new features or functionality.

These new TV sticks follow the EyeTV DTT Deluxe, which was recently added to the product range.

EyeTV Hybrid
The EyeTV Hybrid has had a major overhaul and now has a raft of new capabilities, offering a unique mix of features. The Hybrid now includes FM radio, which can be recorded in the same way as TV. It supports both DVB-T and DVB-C. Plus analogue TV, and analogue input, which means it can be used to connect cable or satellite receivers, archive video from old analogue media, or record live from gaming consoles.
Full specifications can be found here http://www.elgato.com/eyetvhybrid

EyeTV Diversity
The new EyeTV Diversity gets a stylish new enclosure, and it consumes less power than before, making it better for mobile use. It still has dual digital tuners, which use Antenna Diversity technology to make the best of poor signal strength by combining two signals. If you have a rooftop antenna, the new splitter cable feeds the signal into each of the two tuners, which means you can watch and record two live TV shows simultaneously. It also ships with two smaller tilt/swivel antennas.
Full specifications can be found here http://www.elgato.com/eyetvdiversity

EyeTV DTT
The new slimline EyeTV DTT can be used without blocking the other USB ports. Despite its new diminutive size, it sports a full size antenna socket, so there’s no need for an additional adaptor. The new version remains at the low, entry level price of just £39.95 including VAT.

The EyeTV DTT and all other models ship with the multiple award winning EyeTV 3 software.
Full specifications can be found here http://www.elgato.com/eyetvdtt

Availability
The EyeTV Diversity ships today and is available to buy online immediately. It should reach stores in the next few days. The EyeTV DTT and the EyeTV Hybrid will be available in August.

Prices
EyeTV DTT: £39.95 incl. VAT
EyeTV Diversity: £79.95 incl. VAT
EyeTV Hybrid: £99.95 incl. VAT

System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4, G5 or Intel Core processor, 512 MB of physical RAM, a built-in USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X v10.4 or later. Internet connection required to download Program Guide data.

DVB-T reception can vary by location, and a rooftop aerial may be required in areas with a weak or obstructed DVB-T signal.

Elgato is pleased to announce the EyeTV DTT Deluxe, a TV Tuner Micro-Stick for Digital Terrestrial Television (DVB-T). Exceptionally small and beautifully designed, this USB tuner is a perfect fit for every lifestyle and every Mac including the MacBook Air.

EyeTV DTT Deluxe slips easily into the USB port of any Mac without blocking other devices, not even on the MacBook Air’s port hatch. For areas with a strong DVB-T signal, EyeTV DTT Deluxe comes with a miniature telescopic aerial that attaches directly to the end of the micro-stick. It’s a good-looking and unobtrusive solution for those who wish to enjoy television on a Mac without the need for cables.

EyeTV DTT Deluxe also includes a portable rod aerial for areas with a weaker DVB-T signal, as well as an adapter cable to connect a rooftop aerial to deal with a very weak or blocked signal. What’s more, EyeTV DTT Deluxe ships with a remote control and award-winning EyeTV 3 software.

Quality and Power
Despite its exceptionally small size, EyeTV DTT Deluxe is a powerful digital TV tuner that delivers full-size, crystal-clear reception and uncompromising quality. EyeTV DTT Deluxe has one quality setting, lossless. The DVB stream is recorded unaltered for full quality DVB-T content as encoded by the broadcaster.

EyeTV DTT Deluxe supports DVB-T multilingual programming and Dolby Digital sound. In areas in which HDTV is broadcast, EyeTV DTT Deluxe delivers stunning 720p or 1080i HDTV (MPEG-2 as well as H.264/AVC).

A perfect fit for any lifestyle
The whole package is ideal for watching TV on a desktop Mac, but EyeTV DTT Deluxe’s tiny size means that it can work with a laptop in all kinds of places. Because the EyeTV DTT Deluxe takes its power from the USB, users can climb to the top of a mountain and watch the Olympics, or sit in a tent in the country and watch Ray Mears Goes Walkabout. It’s the perfect fit for any Mac, and any lifestyle.

Comes with
- EyeTV 3 digital TV recorder software (CD-ROM)

Google have just released in the US a new version of Google Talk designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch browsers. In addition to sending your friends Gmail messages from your iPhone, you can now chat with them while you’re on the move, too! In your iPhone browser, just go towww.google.com/talk, sign in and start chatting. That’s it. Google Talk runs entirely in the browser so there’s no need to download or install anything.

There are some differences from using Google Talk on your computer. For instance, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on your iPhone, the application needs to be open in your Safari browser. When you navigate away to another browser window or application, your status will be changed to “unavailable” and your Google Talk session will be restarted when you return.

Other than that, we’ve tried to keep the design as faithful to the desktop experience as possible, so it should be familiar to you. You can select from a quicklist of the people you contact most, search your contacts, and manage multiple conversations. You’ll never have to miss out on the latest gossip or updates from friends just because you’re away from a computer.

Mark/Space, Inc. today announced immediate availability of a Windows version of their data transfer software, The Missing Sync for iPhone. Now PC users have access to powerful migration tools, to help ease the process of switching from a smartphone to the iPhone and iPhone 3G. And, current iPhone owners will benefit from the capability to archive SMS messages, call log and notes to their PC.

Mark/Space has offered award-winning software products to Mac users for many years. The Missing Sync for iPhone is just the first of many Mark/Space products planned for the PC, bringing the same reliable, easy to use data management and synchronization capabilities to Windows users.

Brian Hall, Mark/Space CEO, said “At Mark/Space, we create products that enable our customers to easily take their information and data with them. When we released the Mac version of The Missing Sync for iPhone earlier this year it helped make the transition from a smartphone to iPhone very easy for people. We’re happy to bring The Missing Sync for iPhone to the Windows platform. When iPhone 3G ships next month, both Mac and Windows users can be ready to transfer their contacts and calendar information.”

The Missing Sync for iPhone supports migration from most BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Palm OS devices, and devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola that use the Symbian OS. The Migration Assistant is a step-by-step utility that makes transferring contacts and calendars a simple task. If you use Outlook 2003 or 2007, Missing Sync will make switching a breeze. Even if users never synchronized with their PCs before, The Missing Sync for iPhone makes it easy to pull the data from the old phone and load the information onto an iPhone.

The Missing Sync for iPhone collects and archives all the iPhone SMS messages, giving you a safe backup, no matter how prolific a texter you are. It also lets users view SMS messages in a threaded view, just like on the iPhone, and you can easily search the archived messages. When you view a message, the whole history of that conversation with that person is displayed.

iPhone keeps a log of all incoming, outgoing and missed calls. The Missing Sync for iPhone archives the log to your PC, which is great for business users that need to keep track of costs. Need to claim expenses for that hour-long business call to Paraguay? No problem, just check the call log. You can even add notes to the call log, so you remember the details for future reference.

The Notes application on the iPhone is a useful scratch pad for ideas, plans and to-do lists. But often those notes are more useful elsewhere, perhaps in other documents you have on your PC. The Missing Sync for iPhone will transfer those notes to your computer, so they can be read in Mark/Space Notebook, which comes as part of the package. Then, copy the notes from Notebook for use in other applications.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
The Missing Sync for iPhone is available as an electronic download from the Mark/Space online store for $39.95.

The Windows version of The Missing Sync for iPhone requires a PC running Windows XP or Windows Vista. To use the Migration Assistant, Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 is required. An Internet connection may be required to download software for the data migration process.

The BBC today unveils a new-look BBC iPlayer which fully integrates radio and TV in one interface, as the service records over 100 million requests to view programmes in the six months since its launch. The new-look service, which launches in beta tomorrow, will ‘dual run’ alongside the existing iPlayer for the next few weeks.
Erik Huggers, the BBC’s Group Controller for Future Media and Technology, says: “The next generation of BBC iPlayer allows UK licence fee payers to catch up on their favourite BBC TV and radio programmes in one place – a completely unique on-demand service.

“Audiences are now able to experience the full range of BBC content – some 250 TV programmes currently available each week as well as all the BBC radio networks – in a new and more accessible way, and all for free.

“On-demand radio from the BBC has been a phenomenal success since it was first launched in 2002, with around 600 million hours listened to via streaming or the ‘listen again’ function.

“The full integration with iPlayer is a natural evolution for the audio service and an exciting step for audiences.”

Audiences can choose to either listen again to BBC Radio from the last seven days with even better sound quality, or listen live – while the option of a pop-out player allows users to continue listening as they browse other web pages. ’Listen again’ users can now also rewind and fast forward in the same way that they can for TV programmes.

The new-look BBC iPlayer offers a more rewarding user experience, allowing smoother and easier navigation between TV and Radio programmes, while features such as ‘Last Played’ – which allows users to resume watching programmes at the point they have left off – mark the beginning of a shift towards personalisation.

Other key enhancements include combined TV and radio categories such as comedy and drama, a larger playback screen to watch TV programmes and a TV schedule that allows users to plan their viewing over the coming days.

These will sit alongside the existing ‘More Like This’ function, which recommends other programmes users might like.

There have been over 100 million requests to view programmes since BBC iPlayer launched. In May alone, there were 21.8 million requests to view, some 700,000 per day on average.

The new-look BBC iPlayer will be available on other platforms for TV catch-up, including the Apple iPhone & iPod touch, and the Nintendo Wii. Audio on demand and live streaming will become available in due course.
