I am a teacher in North Carolina. We were told at a staff meeting today that the state policy said we as teachers could not accept friend requests on Facebook from anyone who is enrolled in a K-12 NC school. That just doesn't sound correct to me, and I can't find anything in black and white that spells out a policy regarding facebook contacts. I have a facebook with MANY students as my "friends". Mostly they are my former students wanting to keep in touch. Others are my cousins, nieces, nephews, or neighbors that want to stay in touch. I was thinking about how to use facebook to help my students this year. We could post homework, announcements, or messages of encouragement to the students and their parents. It would be an open forum for discussion and would help maintain the lines of communication between school and home. I would like to know if there is a state-wide policy or even a county-wide policy for my area. If we don't have one, I think we need one so we can all be on the same page. Maybe we may need to use facebook in education only by creating a page for our school or for a group within our school. Then the students could "like" that page and still get all the same communication. I'm not sure about how that works though since I've never created a page. I would just love some clarification. I don't want to risk my career for the chance to keep in touch and connect with students, but at the same time I feel as though we will be missing out on a great tool to improve education if we totally eliminate the use of facebook with students.

Nice review! I've been using Screenflow for my last few videos on PliablePress, and couldn't agree more. It's a really friendly app to use, and does everything you need it to! (And importantly, doesn't do anything you don't. Keeps it perfect for making screencasts, where overcomplicating would just hold you back!)

My only feature request for the next version would be the ability to easily copy and paste scenes from one movie to another. All my videos end up with a black screen with some text and a logo, but I have to remake it each time. Not much of a hassle, but annoying when you know it could be simpler.

If you get a Drobo which is reliable, great. But I didn’t. The device has lost its formatting a number of times and has had to be wiped. It also has Firewire port issues. data robotics, the makers of Drobo have not been very good on the Tech Support front, it should be replace able under warranty which you have to pay for and you also have to pay to ship it across Europe because that don’t have a repair center in the UK. A full review is here http://web.me.com/jamie_jones/Drobo-Review/index.html because it would take up to much space on this website. I also suggest other options.

I'm thinking of buying iStopMotion, but the demo isn't showing the external camera I plug in. It's only letting me view through the built-in camera on my laptop. Is it not letting me use my external camera just because I only have the demo or is my Canon Powershot A720 not compatible?

Also, once you've finished collecting all your captured pics for you stop-motion film, can you completely edit your film in iStopMotion or can you export it to iMovie and edit it there?

Thank you!

@Dino (or anyone for that matter): Do you know a way to control a Keynote presentation remotely that allows the presenter to pause on a slide? Ideally, one of the iPhone remote apps allows for pausing. I've been looking, but haven't found the answer yet. Thoughts?

@Dino

or Magic Mouse :)

clicking slides on Powerpoint isn't as convenient as it is on Keynote. right-clicking on Powerpoint brings out the menu, instead of undoing played animation or presented slides. and that's where wireless mouse like Magic Mouse plays remote controller :)

Hi Dan

I use 3rd party software for the quiz area of Moodle, to add more functionality to the quizzes I make up for students, also Sclipo live webclass, useful when I'm sick and can't make it to school, also find the OU Blog to be better than the Moodle standard. Trialing others and can't give much of an opinion on them as yet. Hope that all this helps. Just go to http://moodle.org and go to the Downloads/Modules and Plugins and that is where I get the ones I think will make a difference, you can read a bit on each one that will tell you about it.

We recently did an Adminstrators course with a Moodle expert from Sydney, and I'm patiently waiting for the Moodle 2.0 to come out, it is a lot more functional than the 1.9.... series.

Hi Stuart I'd be keen to know what 3rd party software you're adding to Moodle. Not sure that Moodle is meeting all of my expectations and would like to know how you enhance it.

I'm a big fan of Keynote, I find it a lot nicer to work with than Powerpoint. The way it includes media files in the 'package' makes it much easier to move presentations from drive to drive. Files can get huge though.
