This Sunday sees the 81st Annual Academy Awards and there is no doubt it has been a great year for film. In an attempt to predict the outcome of the awards  GetCloser (The Music and Film Social Network) carried out a poll of their  9000 users with some very interesting results.

The poll, which was opened shortly after nominations were announced, shows that Slumdog Millionaire is an overwhelming favourite among British film fans – 59% of the people that voted feel it should triumph ahead of The Curious Curse of Benjamin Button in the all-important Best Picture and Directing categories.

Mickey Rourke is the popular choice to prevail as the Actor in a Leading Role for his gripping performance in The Wrestler – 42% of the voters preferred him to Brad Pitt (29%) in second spot, while Kate Winslet received was backed by a sizeable 59% of the vote to build on her BAFTA success by landing the Oscar for Actress in a Leading Role for The Reader ahead of Angelina Jolie (22%).

But the biggest endorsement within the online survey went to the late Heath Ledger’s film-stealing performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight – a massive 83% of the 9,000 getcloser.com users that voted supported his nomination of Actor in a Supporting Role.

The only category in which The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came out on top was in the Actress in a Supporting Role category, where Taraji P. Henson (26%) was marginally preferred to Penelope Cruz (25%).

The one thing I feel we can all say with a much greater degree of certainty, however, is that a posthumous Oscar will be awarded to Heath Ledger for his memorably manic portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight.
