Cinemagic Lisburn Kicks Off

The inaugural Cinemagic Lisburn Film Festival for Young People opens on Monday 30th March with a special preview screening of “Race to Witch Mountain” (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Ireland) taking place in Omniplex Cinemas, Lisburn.

The week long programme of media and moving image events for schools is part of a series of activities to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Lisburn this year.

One of the highlights of the programme is a special presentation of Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive which will show clips of Lisburn ranging from the train station in 1897, Shopping Week in 1930, to life in the 1950s and the Queen’s visit in 1953. This free event takes place in Island Arts Centre at 12.00pm on Wednesday 1st April and it is open to schools and the general public.

School Film Programme:
cineLocal Primary and Secondary School pupils are attending special screenings of ‘March of The Penguins’ (30th March) which follows the annual journey of Emperor penguins as they march single file to their traditional breeding ground; the thrill-a-minute adventure ‘The Goonies’ (30th March); ‘Touching The Void’ (31st March), a true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes; the classic musical

 ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ (1st April), Shane Meadow’s ‘Somers Town’ (1st April), a black-and-white study of a social environment in London, and ‘Grizzly Man’ (2 April) which documents the devastating and heartrending story about grizzly bear activists in Alaska.

Nursery schools will be participating in the exciting ‘Cinebabies’ event which will introduce young people  to the wonder and magic of moving image, with the screening of a selection of pre-school television programmes from HIT Entertainment.

School Workshops: 
Primary School pupils, aged 7-11, will be getting creative in a unique Puppet Workshop and demonstration with ‘Face Inclusion Matters’ (30th March) and a fun-filled Claymation Workshop, which will teach young people how to make clay models and animate them using Stop-Motion animation (1st April).

Budding media moguls will pick up top tips from workshops that include Radio Production with Neal McClelland (31st March), Journalism and a Question & Answer session with the Editor of the Newsletter, Darwin Templeton (31st March).

Cinemagic Stars Acting Masterclass.
Young people, aged 13-18, interested in a career in musical theatre or contemporary theatre can develop their acting skills by participating in an intensive 3 day masterclass called ‘Cinemagic Stars’ (3rd-5th April) which is being hosted by actress Mikyla Dodd (Hollyoaks) and Claire Harrison from Diva Arts. Participants will devise, rehearse and perform numerous pieces of drama over 72 hours, and the masterclass will culminate in an end showcase for family and friends.

To apply for a place on the masterclass applicants should explain in 300 words why they would like to participate. Please state which area you are most interested in- contemporary or musical theatre.
