BBC News Make Over – Video ?

Posted on 31. Mar, 2008 by DigMo in News

The BBC News website has received a complete make over bringing it line with the new BBC front page. The site looks brilliant, the usability has been improved and the user experience is definitely better. I would visit the BBC website three or four times per day and quite often my attention will be grabbed by a headline that sadly links to a video option feature that doesn’t work on my computer.

It is important to welcome and celebrate the new look news site, I love it ! but how much better would it be if the new dedicated video page was FLV or even QT friendly ?

Now I realise I could install real player or windows media but my experience of these plugins hasn’t been great to date. We covered this issue a few months ago (here) and I am not calling for Quicktime support on the BBC site (although how good would that be) but my ask is simple why not have a flash based player than works by default on all platforms, all browsers. ITN can manage it and a host of other news sites can do it. With the popularity of YouTube (and BBC even use this for some of their TV shows) why can’t we have flv video on BBC news ?

Does anyone else feel the same if so Digg or comment. Perhaps the BBC are going to roll out a generic video player in the future ? lets hope so.

UPDATE: Just visited the new look BBC site and found this article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7325278.stm
Flash video is coming to the BBC making the site fantastic, this is really great news for Mac users.
