Did Apple do too much?

July 22, 2008

You may remember our post outlining our concern over the sheer amount of updates happening on the 11th July. We had the iPhone 3G launch together with collapse of the O2 upgrade servers. We had the release of the Apple iPhone 2 ROM albeit leaked a little early to some.

We had the update to the iPod Touch that didn’t make the 11th. We had the update to MobileMe that didn’t happen for us until 14th and not without problem and finally we had the global launch of the all new iTunes Apps store.

This is not a “I told you so” post by any means. Today MobileMe continues to cause problems, trial accounts in the UK charged and subsequently gaining an extra 30 days free. All .Mac customers will also enjoy a 30 day extension to their service this year.

Considering the vast array of new services being launched I am actually surprised things went as smoothly as they did. That said surely things could have been staggered. Have the Apps store up a day earlier, have Mobile Me running a week before the iPhone 2 software update ? We are used to Apple being relaxed and in control not having to issue apologies and excuses.

Moans and criticisms aside, how many companies offer all their customers a free month across the board ? I have to say my problems with MobileMe were not that critical, I was slightly annoyed at the slight misconception of push email but still I didn’t expect a full 30 days of service as compensation. Thanks Apple !

Heres looking forward to the next big launch, hopefully not all on the one day though.
