Future Shorts Update

November 24, 2007

webs.png‘Youth’, directed by Jane Linfoot and recently premiered at the Edinburgh festival, opens the programme with a touching study into adolescence. This is followed by ‘What’s a girl to do’, Dougal Wilson’s video for the uber-cool Bat for Lashes, depicting giant mascot-headed BMXers who pedal, hop and twist in sync to music’s subtle pulsing break beats. ‘Monkeylove’, a winner at Clermont-Ferrand this year, from prolific director Royston Tan is the third film, presenting a guy in a monkey suit who is searching poignantly for lost love.

Fresh from the International Film School of Wales is ‘t.o.m.’, an intriguing animated tale of a boy who loses his clothes, nominated for the prestigious Cartoon d’Or award this year. ‘Oh great, now look what happened’ is a Dutch production (coinciding with the launch of Future Shorts in Amsterdam last month), which offers a compelling and enigmatic impression of an unexpected and strange event.

‘Living in the Dark’ from Australia is a touching story of a blind boy which has proved an internet sensation since Future Shorts recently added it to their YouTube channel (watch here ) where it received nearly 20,000 hits in a matter of days, to the delight of its director Thomas Leung.

‘Milan’ from German director Michaela Kezele is a nail-biting narrative about a family during the NATO air raids which wowed the judges at the Tampere Film Festival earlier this year. Finally, closing the programme is ‘Copenhagen Cycles’ from US director Eric Dyer, which follows a cyclist travelling through a fantastical, collaged reconstruction of Denmark’s capital city.
