Instinct at the Nerve Centre

insct.jpgInstinct,The Nerve Centre’s widely acclaimed Young People’s Festival starts its 4th run on Friday 6th april 2007. The week long festival is now an established focal point in the North West’s cultural calendar, providing 14-17 year olds with access to the creative industries. The programme of events was launched at the nerve centre on Tuesday the 20th of march.

A broad range of hands-on workshops covering all aspects of the creative industries, from animation, screenwriting and drama through hip hop dance and circus skills,to radio broadcast and establishing your own internet empire, will be spread throughout Derry in venues including The Nerve Centre, Blast Furnace Recording Studio, Magee Campus, The Playhouse Theatre, The Verbal Arts Centre and The Waterside Theatre. The schedule is packed with ideas and below is just a sample

The Jam returns, this much anticipated event for all budding musicians, where two bands will be created and mentored by professional tutors and give their debut performance on The Nerve Centre stage at the end of the week has become something of a star event at instinct. Singers, guitarists, bass players and drummers are needed, apply early as competition for places will be stiff. For all those wannabe musicians who aren’t ready for a band yet, professional Nerve Centre tutors will deliver hour long lessons during the festival in either guitar, bass guitar, or drums, so maybe next year you can join The Jam!

A two day animation workshop will teach the essentials of clay animation and animated filmmaking with each participant creating their own clay character and producing an animated film, or if you’re interested in sound engineering Rory Donaghy, Studio Manager and Chief Engineer at Blast Furnace Recording Studio will give a step by step course in all areas of the recording process.

inst2.jpgWe are delighted this year to have a wonderful opportunity for 2 young people to actually become co-presenters for the day on bbc radio foyles Stephen mc cauleys electric mainline programme, and have a hand in crafting the show during pre-production.

As well as film screenings every evening a number of festival gigs will take place at the Nerve Centre including blast.ie and Vigilante Events who will present the very best in local music with four local bands – headlined by the sectionable evangelists and ed zealous not to mention a host of others. The scirroco mcs and their partner in crime wile man will host a series of workshops on how to become a master on the mic and decks whilst lush resident noel martin will approach the djing skills from a very different musical prospective.

The Playhouse Theatre will play host to the brilliant and hugely entertaining Open Mic Night where the public get the chance to share their talents with an audience.and possibly make it to Thursday nights big showcase of talent.
