iPhone Unlocking Available but Why Bother ?
July 20, 2008
Today the iPhone Dev team excitedly announced the release of the unlocking application for iPhone 2. Digg will no doubt go mad with the news but I have to admit I am wondering what all the excitement is about ? Perhaps I am wrong (happens) but surely with the new firmware and the Apps Store there is no reason to Jailbreak your iPhone 2 ?
I’ve owned an iPhone since their release in the UK last November. Before that I always bought a phone directly rather than through a network, generally HTC phones.
Many of my friends and colleagues unlocked their iPhones so they could use them on any network, they lost visual voicemail, unlimited wifi, unlimited data but gained a considerably better SMS allocation and a far better range of applications.
This time round surely they gain much less with the launch of the iTunes Apps Store ? If I have this wrong please comment but I really don’t see the benefit of jail breaking my phone this time round.
