New Works in Glass

September 26, 2007

glass.pngExpect the unexpected as Island Arts Centre prepares to unveil exciting and ethereal new works by Belfast artist Heather Wilson. The exhibition, An Interruption in The Way of Things will include beautifully crafted sculptural installations featuring glass, metals, water and light projections exploring the relationship between objects, lighting and space, with a focus on the installation of work. This approach helps to create unique and unusual outcomes, which will surprise and delight viewers invoking reflective perception on the little things in life.

Wilson’s work combines quality craftsmanship and aesthetics with a highly conceptual approach, often belying the perceptions and blurring the labels that are set up between fine and applied art. This exhibition really will offer an accessible and serene path into conceptual or abstract art forms for the experienced and uninitiated alike and offers huge appeal to a varied cross section of people.

Heather is adept at incorporating a diverse range of materials in her work, from porcelain to textiles and print to photography. Through each of these mediums, she is able to bring her own unique voice allowing the material to give expression to what she wants to communicate.

The work is motivated by a sense of “otherness”, a desire to taste, to encounter and to be momentarily immersed in something magical that goes beyond normality and the unremarkable. The shift and transformation of shadows, light and reflections act as a metaphor, expressing the enigma of things that are uncertain, fleeting and elusive.

Photography, water, glass and light are used to investigate this intriguing combination of the physical and the intangible. Everyday materials and simple objects are altered through light’s ability to transform the mundane into something more beautiful, intriguing and full of potential meaning.
