Anyone who has used VirtueDesktops will know what a handy tool the application can be. VirtuDesktop allowed a number of desktops to work on the one system. Moving between desktops is as simple as pressing 3 keys simultaneously but the resultant “eye candy” is particularly impressive.
Sadly though, with the announcement of “spaces” in Leopard the developer has ceased work on the project. The good news is the current release is still available. The features include :
- Virtual screens: an unlimited number of virtual screens at your disposal
- Eye candy: exciting transitions and window fading
- Universal binary: runs at full speed on your shiny new intel-based mac
- AppleScript-able: script your desktop experience
- Unobtrusive: VirtueDesktops does not clutter your desktop - it gets in, switches your virtual screen and then quietly hides itself, waiting for your next request
- Extensible: install plugins to add additional features
- Exposé: works well with Apple’s Exposé
- Keeps you informed: notifications and current desktop display orient you as you work across multiple virtual screens
- “Stick-ify” your windows or applications: Make your windows and applications visible across all of your virtual screens
It is still possible to download the application (free) so if you want the power of numerous desktops and can not wait until leopard then click here.
Statement from the Developer :
“I’ve been sitting on a fairly big decision (for me) for the last few weeks. The writing has been on the wall for VirtueDesktops since last year’s WWDC, and I had intended to release a nice, stable version for 10.4 users before I stopped work on the project…… Needless to say, it wasn’t easy to make this call - I’ve loved working on Virtue, and I think it has some features that Spaces won’t match. The sad fact is, that since June last year, it has all been effort poured into a product that has no future.”
