iPhone UK Confusion Continues

July 5, 2008

In an attempt to establish what is happening next Friday (11th) I made a number of attempts to search for information on the new iPhone 3G launch. Well what we and others found is utterly confusing to say the least. Here are just a few of the confusing gems floating about there.

1. Current iPhone users have to upgrade through the O2 website only. This is clearly published on site but a number of stores are claiming this is one way of doing but you can also upgrade over the phone or by calling in a store and yes you will get your phone there and then.

2. There are no 16GB versions available at launch. This post on Mac Rumours claims that some O2 stores are saying that the 16GB version will be available later in the year.

3. Original plans to allow pre-orders have been scrapped due to the predicted demand. This claim has been denied by two O2 stores who claim the pre-ordering starts on Monday.  PC Advisor backs the claim that pre-orders are still in place with the addition of a VIP pre-order system (here).

4. The original claim that stores will open at 7.02am is also not for all stores. Some stores are opening at 8.02 and others at 9am. Check with your local store for accurate information.

So a week before launch it appears there are no definite details on how to upgrade for current iPhone users. No doubt such details will unfold during next week but we would love to hear from anyone with additional rumours or better confirmations.

It is understandable that with a communications programme on this scale there will be some sort of confusion and hopefully we will know more in the next day or so.  As the countdown starts so does the level of excitement :)

Compare this to AT&T (Thanks Automated Home)

You can definitely queue and get your upgrade in store next Friday. I phoned 3 stores yesterday and they all confirmed this.

What no 16GB, I phoned a CPW and they said they didn’t know what stock they were getting at this stage. They also assumed anyone including upgraders could get on Friday but acknowledged what their site said about o2.co.uk

This is typical isn’t it. New customers first and upgraders wait until O2 post them out…. who knows how long that will take. If they want media hype they should boost the queues with current owners…. lets face it last Nov was a damp squib.

Ian R - Wait a week - are you mad man!!!

    :)

I too have had conflicting info from my local store and O2 on the phone. Have a look at how well prepared AT&T are - with a video for News customers, Upgraders etc…

Unreal, AT&T really are ready for iPhone 3G…. I admit I queued last November well, me and 3 others and it was hyped up beyond believe. If they want good press I agree get the current customers into the queues!

Samantha, we can beat that Max O’Malley a good friend of DigMo! was the only person in his queue http://maxomalley.wordpress.com/2007/11/10/iphone-launch-party/

Hey, i work for o2, so here goes….

Firstly, the 16GB models will not be available upon launch. This is what we have been told by managers. It sucks, as i wanted a 16gb one on my iphone early upgrade, but oh well…

If you want to upgrade from an existing iphone plan, you cannot do it through store. Your best bet is over the phone with customer services.

Pre-ordering has been scrapped completely. First come first serve.

Yes, store opening times depends on your store, whether its on the high street, or in a shopping centre etc. Check your local store for more info.

Hopefully that’s better. We’ll know more closer to the actual date. Bring it on!
