Internet Blackout

If you have been on Twitter today you may have spotted a number of people who have replaced their Twitter icon with a single black square. Users from all over the world including a few big name celebrities such as @StephenFry are showing their support from New Zealand’s Internet Blackout.

The Internet Blackout runs from 16th – 23rd February and is a protest against the Guilt Upon Accusation law ‘Section 92A’ that calls for internet disconnection based on accusations of copyright infringement without a trial and without any evidence held up to court scrutiny.

This law is due to come into effect on February 28th unless immediate action is taken by the National Party.

As someone who has a number of friends in New Zealand this blog post indicates our support for the campaign. We like many others support Copyright law and the artists such laws protect but the guilty on accusation is simply a step too far.

Thanks for this – I was wondering why some of the icons had been blacked out.

You are absolutely right, this is a step too far. I too support the campaign.
